Authentic humility, avoiding hubris, is to seek the will of God.
Words from Isaiah 58:3...
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,
‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we
humbled ourselves,
and you have not noticed?’
See, we even want
attention for our humility!
Now, that is ego! That is
the church equivalent of Mohamed Ali singing float like a butterfly, sting like
a bee. That is John Lennon saying “We’re more popular that Jesus.”
The Isaiah words later
continue…
“Is not this the kind of humility I have chosen:
to loose the chains of
injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with
shelter—
when you see the naked, to
clothe them,
That is the humility that Jesus taught.
Not a self-serving, “hey look at how humble I am”
fake humility.
But a Jesus-focused, attitude of serving others,
authentic humility, that does not need to demand attention because it will be
self- evident.
As Jesus taught…”each tree is recognized by its
own fruit.” (Luke 6:44)
Let us grow good fruit that will speak for itself.
